Chrysler Splits With New Media Strategies Over F-Bomb Tweet

"The tweet was seen in even harsher light given that campaign strategy. In the automaker's communication blog to the media today, Chrysler Communications staffer Ed Garstens wrote, "The tweet denigrated drivers in Detroit and used the fully spelled-out F-word. It was obviously meant to be posted on the person's personal Twitter account, and not the Chrysler Brand account where it appeared. So why were so sensitive? That commercial featuring the Chrysler 200, Eminem and the City of Detroit wasn't just an act of salesmanship. This company is committed to promoting Detroit and its hard-working people. The reaction to that commercial, the catchphrase 'imported from Detroit,' and the overall positive messages it sent has been volcanic."
But, have to say ... this all sounds quite hollow.
Has anybody up in Auburn Hills holier-than-thou sepluchre listened to or read the lyrics of an Eminem song recently ...???

There was this kid I grew up with; he was younger than me. Sorta looked up to me, you know. We did our first work together, worked our way out of the street. Things were good, we made the most of it. during the print days, we ran double spreads... made a fortune, your father, too. As much as anyone, I loved him and trusted him. Later on he had an idea to tweet and facebook. That kid's name was Moe Greene. This was a great man, a man of vision and guts. And there isn't even a plaque, or a signpost or a statue of him online! Someone put a bullet through his eye. No one knows who gave the order. When I heard it, I wasn't angry; I knew Moe, I knew he was head-strong, talking loud, posting the F-bomb twitter. So when he turned up dead, I let it go. And I said to myself, this is the business we've chosen; I didn't ask who gave the order, because it had nothing to do with business!
Oh great, the dmg is trying to stay topical and timely by bashing the folks who are trying to pull his competition out of the old world and into the 21st century. We get it - Twitter is hard for the oldsters to understand.
Of course it’s also obvious that dmg is writing on these things he despises and doesn’t understand to take his mind off what’s really going on out there – the near-certain cancellation of the upcoming NFL season. This probably means he’s going to have to force his underlings and minions to come up with something new and different. No more simply changing the year on the media plan and updating the costs. Hey, dmg, you could always buy even more American Idol.
Or, if you want to step out into the new world of accountable media – now with oldster-friendly actual television goodness! - you could buy into Google-TV. The future of television is here, bub, and it’s calling you to stop your whinging and hating and step up to the 21st century at last.
Who knows? Maybe those clients of yours will be so impressed, they’ll even spring for some fine cubanos and chardonnay!

For those of you living under a stone for the last year- Rupert Murdoch has been jostling with Google about blocking all of his content (he pretty much runs large parts of the media in UK and USA). The motive behind these actions is of course to try and force Google’s hand and possibly get Bing involved so as he can make additional revenues from his content. It really is not clear where this battle is headed but one thing for certain is that Murdoch is one of the smartest media operators in the world and the battle over revenue models for the entire industry lies very firmly on his shoulders. This battle has a way to run but it’s outcome will shape the print media industry for many years to come.
Who wooda thunk Media Guy would side with a right wing looney light Murdoch?? Probably all of us--your gig is up.
